Who Will Pay for Democrat Ideas?

Socialism on the surface seems innocuous enough, considering that Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren want everyone to have “free” healthcare in the form of “Medicare for All.”

Who is going to pay for it?  As always, the ever-elusive, tax-avoidant, very wealthy (one-percenters) and corporate America are supposed to foot the bill. The economics don’t work, of course.  One could wholly confiscate the wealth of that group and the funds would remain insufficient. There is no doubt the middle class would assume a massive tax burden.

To remain vigilant in the face of seasoned operators like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, it is important to remember that their brand of socialism does not have to be economically sound. It simply needs to be psychologically viable. Sanders, Warren, and even Joe Biden fundamentally understand how greed preys upon the heart and mind. This dark source of human motivation plants false beliefs that ultimately lead to predatory thinking and class warfare through identity politics. Nowhere is this more evident than in the area of entitlements. Everyone more or less believes that underfunded, or for that matter unfunded, entitlement programs need to be trimmed back or eliminated altogether.

 Like socialist regimes from the old Soviet Union to today’s Venezuela, politicians promise free lunches without proper regard for who will provide them. This is the heart of socialism, which is beating hard in the American psyche.  Sanders, Warren, and the other Democrat presidential contenders are selling the same ideas that have failed everyplace they have been implemented.

Socialism is a short-term pragmatic approach that diminishes private property rights. It always breaks down over the course of time due to the very shortages that it produces. And if not reined in, its most extreme form deteriorates into communism and the dictatorship that inevitably accompanies it.

The same can be said of democracies. If not properly safeguarded, they drift towards socialism via fraudulent wealth distribution and the confiscatory means used to attain it. Then there is the fair question of what contributions did the socialist debaters bring to the table? What have they produced besides a vicious cycle of wealth redistribution and class warfare? Not to be deterred, socialists such as Sanders and Warren fundamentally understand that they do not have to attain or appeal to higher virtues to curry political favor and power. They can simply divide and conquer by throwing a bone like nationalized healthcare into the midst of the pack while stepping back from the ensuing fray. Sanders attempted to justify his brand of politics when challenged as “democratic socialism” supported by popular vote instead of outright force by a dictator (Venezuela is only the latest example). The outcome, despite the means, is still the same.

What should America expect going forward from the Democrat presidential contenders who, either openly or subtly, embrace socialist policies?  Definitely do not get your hopes up about any meaningful dialogue regarding relevant social policies and societal trends that are tearing our country apart. Expect some punchlines supporting the war on the unborn under various “feel good” sounding slogans.  Also lower expectations about anything that addresses the rampant crime and mindless violence in our nation’s largest cities beyond blaming guns instead of those who use them unlawfully.

 As far as social justice, tolerance is out and sensitivity is in. Culture reigns supreme and religious institutions are irrelevant if not in tune with the spirit of the times. Finally on the road to serfdom, look for more talk on government giveaways focusing on who plays, instead of who pays. The Democrat that emerges from the group of contenders will be the one that dances best to the party tune. There will be no celebration of new ideas. Rather, a contrived, risk-avoidant, boring event that will only rouse the party faithful with the same tired ideas that have universally failed and so deeply harmed every nation in which they have been attempted.

The paradigm has shifted in western politics, and not for the better.

Since the end of the Second World War, most nations in what has been known as “the Free World” had no tolerance for the use of physical force or overt bias against individuals because of their religious beliefs.  While disputes were often harsh and bitter, it was the general opinion that accepting the results of elections was an unquestioned good practice.

However, in 2016, both in the United States and the United Kingdom, the results of free and fair elections have been challenged by elites who are bitter about losing and are doing everything possible to ignore the will of the voters.  In America, that means delegitimizing the Trump Administration.  There have been violent demonstrations, and acts of violence against those identifying as supporters of the President. In Great Britain, where some Tory politicians have joined with their left-wing rivals in a grand alliance of the elites, it involves trying to ignore the demands of the British people to leave the European Union.

Two key factors have dramatically altered the dynamic towards democracy that occurred after the Second World War.  It has been credibly argued that they are directly related.

Despite the potential for greater democratization of political discussion resulting from widespread use of the internet, the command of that vast medium by those with leftist perspectives and their continual exclusion of those that disagree with them represents the most visible rise of the elites, a counter-revolution of sorts against what had been the increase in influence of the common man or woman.

Throughout history, the possession of power by elites, whether in the guise of emperors, monarchs, aristocrats or dictators has been the norm, not the exception.

 That changed in the New World with the rise of the United States.  The French Revolution did not yield a similar result, but gradually, some European nations achieved a lesser but still salutary level of freedom.

The tide turned against personal liberty with the rise of Communism in Russia, Fascism in Italy, Nazism in Germany, and imperialism in Japan. Allied victory in World War II allowed all of the Axis Powers but Russia (the USSR was originally allied with Hitler but switched sides when Germany attacked it) to again tread the path of democratization.

The tide is, worryingly, turning again.  The New Left, intolerant of dissent, guided by those who feel morally superior and possessing sufficient power to heavily influence key institutions such as the media, education and other essential levers, have, in essence, initiated a counterrevolution against democracy.

There are two wings to the New Left. 

The ideologues, some of whom are young and with an insufficient comprehension of the evils of centralized control, express their beliefs through strident, inaccurate and often thoroughly illogical statements, often accompanied by violence or the threat thereof. Many have picked up their inclinations as a result of a politically biased, left-leaning education, propped up by the entertainment industry (which is now partially financed by Chinese investors.)

Ignorance plays a key role in their political orientation. Listen to a press conference with their standard-bearers, such as newly elected Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.  One can argue about her political philosophy, but her staggering lack of logical thinking and her blithe disregard of facts is beyond question.

Ignorance is apparently no barrier to the progress of the careers of the New Left.  Consider “Beto” O’Rourke, widely touted as a potential Democratic Party candidate for president in 2020. CNN says of the young Congressman:

“There’s zero question as to who the buzziest candidate — or potential candidate — in the 2020 Democratic presidential race is. It’s Beto O’Rourke. And it’s not close.”  However, CNN goes on to note: “But for all the excitement … there’s still a whole lot that people don’t know about him. And more importantly, a lot that O’Rourke doesn’t know. That fuzzy knowledge was on awkward display in a lengthy…interview in El Paso…The answer to every policy question can’t simply be, “Man, I don’t know. We are going to have to talk to everyday Americans and then roll our sleeves up and get something done for the country.”

The second wing is a historically more familiar group.  Where once control was wielded by those with ties to royalty, the “nobility” of the 21st century gains its strength from dominant positions in key areas or through the sheer power of their purse. Despite their acquisition of their wealth through capitalism, they seek to institutionalize control through the centralization of authority, a hallmark of socialism, with themselves at the helm, either publicly or behind the scene.

The rise of socialism, just another excuse for centralized control, will prove disastrous, economically and in terms of human rights, if successful. Recognizing that reality is the first step in preventing it from occurring.

There was one essential, underlying issue the report, like many other similar media examinations, failed to include: why Venezuela, a nation of good, intelligent, and hard-working people, a land blessed with vast natural wealth including a veritable ocean of oil, has been reduced to this condition.  In 2017, Michael Shifter reported that “Just a decade ago, Venezuela was perhaps the most influential Latin American country in the Organization of American States (OAS), the world’s oldest regional cooperation group…On April 26, after a majority of OAS states called a special meeting to discuss Venezuela’s crisis, Caracas declared that it would leave the organization.”

Despite the extreme depths the Caracas government has already fallen to under socialist rule, the crisis continues to deepen. Nathaniel Parish Flannery, writing in Forbes reported earlier this year: “In 2018 Venezuela is struggling though the hemisphere’s worst economic problems. Inflation is rapidly spiraling towards crisis levels and everyday economic activity continues to be severely encumbered by a nonsensical system of currency controls. In 2018 Venezuela’s GDP is expected to contract by double digits for the third straight consecutive year. Economic output in Venezuela fell by 16% in 2016, 14% in 2017, and is expected to drop by 15% this year. Meanwhile, after jumping from 112% in 2015 to 2,400% last year, inflation in Venezuela is expected to hit five-digit levels in 2018. Venezuela’s slow-burning economic collapse is quickly becoming a regional humanitarian crisis as Venezuelans flee in ever larger numbers, looking for refuge in neighboring and nearby countries. Revealing those facts, along with the tainted motives of those endorsing limiting First Amendment rights is certainly inconvenient for the progressives and leftists that seek so diligently to avoid exposure.

The most self-evident of the various issues which some seek to ban honest analysis of is immigration.  Serious review of the merits of essentially open borders (and, yes, that is what the left desires) is cut off by unfounded claims that those arguing for rational policies are racists, anti-immigrant, and therefore their ideas should be ostracized from the public square.

Not having substantive border controls clearly leads to danger on multiple fronts, including the introduction of contagious diseases, admission of criminal gangs such as MS-13, penetration by terrorists masquerading as economic refugees, and extraordinary expense to federal, state and local governments. Legal residents with limited means endure serious competition for housing, jobs, and fair pay.

Why do open borders have so many advocates, when those threats exist? Take a quick look at those who want open borders, and why.

Politically, Democrats profit. The Progressive establishment on college campuses would be rebelled against by students if the history of this totalitarian concept was laid bare.

An ancient wrongdoing that proponents frequently seek to avoid honest analysis of, and which continues to be perpetuated, is one that has a long and horrible pedigree. Anti-Semitism has been a staple of history. It has taken many forms, from the religious discrimination of prior centuries to ethnic persecution which reached its worst expression in the National Socialist government of Adolf Hitler. By the way, the fact that “Nazi” is shorthand for the Third Reich’s National Socialist regime is one which  advocates of socialism scrupulously ignore.

The modern form of anti-Semitism wears the camouflage of miscasting Israeli actions as being oppressive.  The tiny nation awash in a sea of enemies has been the target of attempted extermination by hostile regional neighbors since its founding.  It has endured both major military assaults as well as constant terrorist threats, including rocketry  attacks from Palestinian territory and elsewhere. The list could go on and on, but the strategy is already clear: defend failed, self-serving and oppressive policies by cutting off the debate that exposes its true nature. When countervailing ideas cannot be contained, engage in personal attacks against those exposing the key truths.

Pushing a Failed Philosophy

Throughout its existence, socialism has done little more than worsen poverty, create mass murder, and abolish freedom. The experiment has been tried—and failed– throughout the world, in every type of nation, for over a century. Even the president of the latest country destroyed by socialism, Venezuela, has admitted the reality that can no longer be hidden: his nation’s economy, despite the enormous advantage of vast deposits of oil, has collapsed.

The philosophy of the left has powerful and influential advocates within America in politics, the arts, the media, education, and especially among a certain class of billionaires who disdain the masses and seek to establish a top-down system, of course led by them. But how to sell an idea that produced only misery for over a century?  It can’t be done in open debate. It can’t be done through the normal discourse of public discussion. There are no tales of success to entice voters with.

And so, a very different course of action is followed. A relentless overpoliticization of the culture is undertaken, in which every flaw, every shortcoming, every lack of perfection is headlined and dwelled upon incessantly. Imagine a documentary about Babe Ruth that contains only descriptions of the times he struck out.  That is the intellectually dishonest tactic that Progressives adhere to.

Needless to say, the mass murders committed in the Soviet Union, China, and Cambodia, and by the National Socialist of Germany are largely ignored, as are comparisons between North and South Korea, or in the old East and West Europe. Just as the Obama Administration unlawfully used the federal government to beat down opponents, states attorneys general could—some already have– relentlessly entangle moderate and conservative voices in endless rounds of lawsuits.  Faced with the expense and time-consuming challenge of responding, those non-progressive institutions and individuals lose even when they eventually beat the nonsense lawsuits in court.

The inappropriate use of the machinery of government to intimidate and defeat alternative voices, and attempts to prevent dissemination of differing views, are tactics universally employed in left-wing regimes. The well-practiced playbook is now being employed within America.

The Subtle Rise of Authoritarians

The verbal and legal assaults on the current American presidency have a great deal in common with events occurring in the United Kingdom, including the government’s attempt to evade the mandate of the people to leave the European Union, and the jailing of Tommy Robinson for merely speaking the truth about the impact of Britain’s cultural surrender.

In both nations, establishment elitists, allied with the left and diametrically opposed to middle class interests, have rejected the results of democracy while continuing to give lip service to the practice.  The electorate in both nations, according to them, voted “the wrong way” and a course correction must be undertaken, despite constitutional and legal prohibitions against doing so.

Key issues in the two countries that have proven frustrating for socialists and elites are dealt with in ways that seek to mask the reality that the will of people is being ignored.  In the U.K., that includes interminable foot dragging on Brexit, and chilling free speech rights of individuals pointing out the harm done to British society by the European Union’s ill- conceived immigration policies. In the U.S., politically biased judges have sought to unlawfully revoke Presidential authority, while key intelligence agency leaders such as former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI director Robert Mueller do all they can to hamstring the White House with unsubstantiated allegations.  The refusal of the U.S. Justice Department to cooperate with Congressional investigators is the most open revolt against Constitutional government since the Civil War.

The issue, in both Britain and America, has moved far beyond the question of whether one approves of a particular elected official or policy.  It is now a question of whether the will of free peoples expressed at the ballot box is subject to a veto by elitist figures, left leaning media, and unresponsive bureaucrats.

This authoritarian joint turn by both globalist elites and the hard left was seen as necessary due to the growing general anger over the detrimental impact of their policies. Disturbingly, that detrimental impact may well have been intentional.

The dramatic weakening of the middle class, which consistently occurs in socialist nations (the latest being Venezuela) is seen as an acceptable, indeed, even welcomed, by-product of the policies of the globalists.

All this occurs, not coincidentally, as socialist principles and perspectives have been promoted into the mainstream by activists and media supporters, as evidenced by primary victories for individuals such as New York City’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (who defeated powerful incumbent and presumed heir to Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Joe Crowley) and the popularity of Bernie Sanders. While the marriage of plutocrats such as George Soros and Tom Steyer to the socialist leanings of Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez may seem an odd one, the worldview of both have very much in common. Both socialists and elitist leaders share a belief that individuals lack the competence to administer their own lives. For different reasons, both have a distaste for national borders.

Socialism and elitistism are the currently fashionable excuse for authoritarian actions. Absolute monarchs, fascist dictatorships, and theocratic rulers all share the same top-down philosophy of governance.  Only the trappings and excuses are different.

Is Socialism the Future of the Democrat Party? Part 2

The Democratic Socialists of America, which now holds considerable influence over the Democrat Party, has been described as “a rapidly growing big-tent movement that has drawn in former communists and fired up millennials.”

The key question is why. Comparisons clearly demonstrating the inferiority of socialism are abundantly clear.  The U.S.S.R. vs. the USA.  During the Cold War, Western Europe vs. Eastern Europe. North Korea vs. South Korea.  Cuba and Venezuela vs. non-socialist new world neighbors (The Democrat Socialists of America organization  has called Latin America, with its dysfunctional governments in Cuba and Venezuela, a “political stronghold.”)

The Third Reich was indeed a socialist government. Reisman points out that “private ownership of the means of production existed in name only under the Nazis and that the actual substance of ownership of the means of production resided in the German government. For it was the German government and not the nominal private owners that exercised all of the substantive powers of ownership: it, not the nominal private owners, decided what was to be produced, in what quantity, by what methods, and to whom it was to be distributed, as well as what prices would be charged and what wages would be paid, and what dividends or other income the nominal private owners would be permitted to receive. The position of the alleged private owners, Mises showed, was reduced essentially to that of government pensioners. De facto government ownership of the means of production, as Mises termed it, was logically implied by such fundamental collectivist principles embraced by the Nazis as that the common good comes before the private good and the individual exists as a means to the ends of the State. If the individual is a means to the ends of the State, so too, of course, is his property. Just as he is owned by the State, his property is also owned by the State.”

Socialist nations as diverse as Russia, Cambodia, and Venezuela have endured exceptional damage to the well-being of their citizenry and the health of their economies. Some had hoped that China’s experiment in promoting consumerism within a socialist state would produce more salutary results.  However, as President Xi consolidates and enhances his power and steers his government back to the more repressive environment of Maoist days, that hope has been dashed. Even at its best, China’s government was always a harsh oppressor of human rights. It should also not be forgotten that China’s economic progress depends heavily on selling goods made by cheap labor to more capitalist-governed nations.
