Covid Coverup

In the 2016 presidential campaign, candidate Donald Trump’s position that America was in danger from the reality that key items, such as pharmaceuticals, were manufactured abroad, particularly in China, was stridently attacked both by his political foes and the media.

His warning has proved prophetic, but his Democratic opposition and their newsroom allies  have done their best to both cover up that fact, and their own negligence in the spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.

In January 2020, President Trump issued a proclamation suspending entry into the United States of those who pose a risk of transmitting the Covid-19 virus. The President noted that:

“During Fiscal Year 2019, an average of more than 14,000 people traveled to the United States from China each day, via both direct and indirect flights…The potential for widespread transmission of the virus by infected individuals seeking to enter the United States threatens the security of our transportation system and infrastructure and the national security.  Given the importance of protecting persons within the United States from the threat of this harmful communicable disease, I have determined …to restrict and suspend the entry .… of all aliens who were physically present within the People’s Republic of China…into the United States.  I have also determined that the United States should take all necessary and appropriate measures to facilitate orderly medical screening and, where appropriate, quarantine of persons allowed to enter the United States who may have been exposed to this virus.”

Media and Democrat reaction was swift and harsh. On February 1, Joe Biden tweeted “We need to lead the way with science — not Donald Trump’s record of hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering. He is the worst possible person to lead our country through a global health emergency.”

In a television interview, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) opposed the President’s move. He insisted that he would not close the borders, and condemned the White House move as xenophobic.

In February, notes National Review, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) , concerned over the extraordinary virulence of Covid-19, openly questioned China’s lack of transparency about the disease and its origin.  He was widely smeared by the media.

President Trump ordered the Naval hospital ship Comfort to report to New York. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow ridiculed the timing of the move, claiming it would take “weeks” for the vessel to arrive. It docked in NYC just 10 days later.  She issued no retraction or apology.

In New York City, the current epicenter of the pandemic, the media has been silent on the blatant culpability of Democrat Mayor de Blasio’s key role in allowing Covid-19 to devastate the Big Apple. He refused to close down public schools, considerably after other municipalities had already done so. He only relented in the face of a threatened law suit by teachers. In January and February, his health commissioner, Oxiris Barbot, said “We are encouraging New Yorkers to go about their everyday lives …those who had recently traveled from Wuhan were not being urged to self-quarantine or avoid large public gatherings.” On February 2nd, she added “The risk to New Yorkers for Coronavirus is low, and our preparedness as a city is very high. There is no reason not to take the subway, not to take the bus, not to go out to your favorite restaurant”

As the Trump Administration and responsible political leaders sought to frame legislation aimed at reducing the dire financial predicament affecting Americans as a result of the pandemic, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shamelessly sought to use the opportunity to fund a host of Democrat pet political projects.  Again, the media gave Democrats a pass.

Partisanship is an unfortunate reality in politics. There are times, however, when a crisis of sufficient magnitude mandates putting it aside.  As America reels under an unprecedented threat, the inability or refusal of the Democratic Party and its media allies to do so deserves universal condemnation.
