Addressing overt Chinese threats is not new to the American intelligence community or the political leadership in Washington. What has alluded the US over the last 30 years is a comprehensive understanding of the process by which decisions are made inside the top-down culture of the CCP. Americans often appear transfixed by the mystique of China and overlook the longer-term danger posed by the belligerent communist regime and the hegemonic ambitions of President Xi Jinping. The Trump Administration is the first to work to reverse decades of US foreign policy. In the past Washington failed to hold China accountable for its actions or, in some cases, ignored or proactively aided China’s poor behavior.

During the 2010-2012 period almost two dozen of America’s intelligence assets inside the Chinese bureaucracy were systematically executed or imprisoned. Washington has not revealed officially who inside the Obama/Biden Administration leaked the information. Years of intelligence work disintegrated almost overnight along with much of the knowledge about how China’s communist government operates. One former intelligence officer familiar with the situation recently said the US is flying blind and doesn’t know a lot of what Beijing is up to, or capable of, in the future. This should concern all Americans.

The leak was one of the worst disasters for spying operations since the United States normalized relations with China. Beijing was not subtle in its response. It even shot one American asset in front of his government colleagues to send a clear message to others. The Trump Administration is not giving China free rein. The result is relations between the two nations are becoming more tense. It is to be expected. We are witnessing increasingly contentious interactions between the two nations. IT doesn’t mean it is time to back down. Bullets may not be flying across the Pacific, but the United States narrative is moving quickly from one describing a “Cold War” environment to a tale of a “Hot Peace” with China.

US officials no longer look the other way or assume China is using the same political “operating system” as in the West. Nor do they falsely imagine China acting benignly in its ascendency to global power as did previous American administrations. Delinking the national security-related aspects of the US economy from that of China is not an easy task. Huawei is one example. The US had to put pressure on its European allies and other nations to keep them from falling into the China trap. Washington sent representatives with classified briefings to Europe to expose China’s goals to western leaders. 

Recently the Chinese telecom giant, with its 200,000-person, civilian-military fusion workforce, has been in the news due to the security threat it poses to the West. Few Americans realize that its two main Chinese campuses include massive city-like building complexes designed to mimic 12 famous European landmarks and include actual European-style castles. The CCP leadership also put outs misinformation, disinformation, and outright propaganda. It continues to do so even with pushback from the West, though Washington is beginning to expose China’s strategy. The CCP leadership demands concession after concession from countries without giving any in return. It pushes until it gets as much as it can without conducting outright warfare. Earlier this week Zhao Lijian, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that China treats its South China Sea neighbors as “equals” and that Beijing would not take sides on the issue. There was no truth to the statement but that was not of concern to the CCP. For President Xi Jinping the ends justify the means. 

Washington is no longer tolerating China to gain access to its market. US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo responded to Zhao’s statement, in a highly-publicized speech, that the United States would not allow China to treat the South China Sea as its “maritime empire.” The verbal jousting is escalating. Beijing is getting pushback in many areas for the first time in decades.

The reality the world faces is that China doesn’t abide by the western, rules-based international order developed and led by the United States. The communist giant intends to remake the world in its image. The US may have lost a lot of assets in China but it is beginning to comprehend how China thinks and acts. Next it needs to ask “What is China’s Grand Strategy?” Can the communist nation be counted on to act as a friendly, long-term competitor of the United States or will Washington be forced to constrain the ascendant communist giant that lies and tries to bully the world into submission?

Antisemitism Increases

AMCHA, an organization which monitors 450 college campuses across the U.S. for anti-Semitic activity, has released a new report indicating a 300% surge in anti-Semitic attacks,

Ninety-four percent of these challenges came from anti-Zionist student groups, chief among them Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), a very small but vocal minority of Jews that identify themselves as anti-Zionist, and faculty members who support and promote an academic boycott of Israel. In fact, JVP’s campus activity increased 45% in 2019, much of the activity involving challenges to the definition of anti-Semitism.

The study also found that Israel-related anti-Semitic harassment is far more likely than classical anti-Semitic harassment to occur online or be adaptable to the online platforms that will be utilized in 2020/2021 for COVID-19-related distance learning.

The researchers suggested that the dramatic and alarming uptick in challenges to the definition of anti-Semitism is likely a response to recent federal, state and student efforts, as well as the Trump Administration’s recent executive order, to get government agencies and universities to use the IHRA definition to ensure that Jewish students are adequately protected from anti-Semitic harassment under anti-discrimination laws, such as Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and university harassment policies based on them. Although Jewish students have been considered a protected minority under Title VI for several years, their complaints of Israel-related harassment have regularly been dismissed by the Department of Education and ignored by university administrators. It was therefore hoped that use of the IHRA definition would allow government officials and university administrators to recognize and adequately address Israel-related harassment as anti-Semitism.

The researchers point out, however, that “as challenges to the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism have led to increased harassment of Jewish students, they have also undermined efforts to ensure that Jewish students are adequately protected from that harassment. The challengers’ principle argument – that the IHRA definition ‘falsely’ identifies anti-Zionist speech as anti-Semitic, and if adopted, would have a chilling effect on freedom of speech and subvert academic freedom – has made some university and government officials reticent to use the definition in adjudicating cases of harassment.”

As a result, it effectively neutralizes challenges to the IHRA definition from anti-Zionist individuals and groups that have impeded fair and adequate administrative responses to anti-Jewish harassment. Instead of seeking protection for individual Jewish students from their membership in a federally-protected identity group, our approach seeks protection for Jewish students as individuals, with the same rights as all other individuals, to be free from behaviors that seek to suppress or deny their self-expression, including expressions of belief and group identity.”

The new approach is rooted in protections provided to all students by the First Amendment, and it calls on colleges and universities to take a number of steps to combat intolerant behavior that suppresses student expression, including: (1) view intolerant behavior, including anti-Semitic harassment, as a major threat to students’ right to freedom of expression; (2) consider intolerant behavior to be actionable when it infringes to an unacceptable degree on the freedom of expression of others; (3) establish robust bullying/cyberbullying policies that protect all students equally from intolerant behavior that suppresses expression or restricts the ability to participate in campus life, irrespective of the motivation of the perpetrator or the identity of the victim; and (4) establish fair and consistent protocols for handling intolerant but constitutionally protected speech.

“In the long term, ensuring that all students are afforded equal protection and equal redress from behaviors that deny their right to self-expression, regardless of the motivation of the perpetrator or the identity of the victim, can provide Jewish students with permanent protection from anti-Semitic behavior that has previously been denied to them,” recommended the researchers. They also noted that “in contrast to the current approach of protecting students by virtue of their membership in legally protected groups, which can easily lead to the exacerbation of group difference and an unhealthy competition for group rights, the proposed approach offers the possibility of a healthier campus climate.”

The study also revealed that, different from what has been documented globally, campuses, for the second year in a row, have experienced a significant decline in incidents of classic anti-Semitic harassment (down 49%) and a significant increase in Israel-related incidents (up 60%). In addition, promotion of academic BDS, including attempts to restrict or shut down popular study abroad programs, continued to rise dramatically and was strongly correlated with discrimination against, harassment of and the suppression of speech of Jewish students.

“[T]he current study of anti-Semitic activity in 2019 has shown that Israel-related harassment continues to be the dominant and steadily increasing form of behavior targeting Jewish students for harm and is easily adaptable to the online platforms that are likely to play a major role in the 2020-2021 academic year, and perhaps longer. It is therefore more important than ever that universities consider a new, comprehensive approach to combating all forms of intolerant behavior, including both classical and Israel-related anti-Semitism, and begin taking the necessary steps to ensure that all students are equally protected from action and speech that suppress their self-expression ad deny their full participation in campus life. We believe an approach that holds all students to the same behavioral expectations, and addresses all intolerant action and speech equally, is the best way to protect Jewish students from all forms of campus anti-Semitism,” concluded the researchers in their recommendations.

We have been told that our borders should be open and uncontrolled, and that denying entry to those illegally crossing is racist and xenophobic.  This has caused great expense, and substantial increases in violent crime. Those favoring ending most border controls apparently don’t care.

China has increased its rate of spending faster than either the Soviet Union or the USA at the height of the Cold War, and has become a full-fledged military superpower that has no intention of abiding by international arms treaties. It has already moved to occupy territory not its own.  Russia, thanks to an Obama/Clinton treaty, now has the planet’s most powerful nuclear force. Iran’s leadership continues to strive for “Death to America.”  These things occurred at a time when the U.S., under Obama, was slashing its military spending, when the nation’s nuclear arsenal was deteriorating, and when it was withdrawing heavy equipment from Europe. Despite this blatant and rapidly growing danger, some continue to advocate dramatically cutting the Pentagon budget.

 It’s worse than just nonchalance in the face of mounting danger.  John Kerry has advised Iran on how to deal with American foreign policy. Hillary Clinton has financially gained from the sale of the basic ingredient of nuclear weapons to Russia.  Joe Biden, through his son, has made a fortune from deals with China.   

Too many in our major centers of education, information and entertainment disdain America. Our students are given a false perspective of history which ignores all of the nation’s extraordinary achievements and advances in freedom, and are instead force-fed a false narrative that only dwells on past imperfections.  Some social media personnel have been more comfortable working with Beijing than Washington.

The assault on the Bill of Rights continues to intensify.  Senator Schumer introduced legislation to weaken the First Amendment.  Universities and social media barons claim that anything they disagree with is “hate speech” and claim the right to censor differing opinions. Municipalities act as though the Second Amendment doesn’t exist.  The Fourth Amendment Right to Privacy has become virtually just a historical memory. The Ninth and Tenth Amendments, which mandates that powers not specifically given to the federal government belong to the states and to individuals, are ignored by an increasingly unresponsive and dominating “deep state” of unelected, unaccountable federal bureaucrats.

A new picture of America is emerging: a nation weakened and endangered abroad, with individuals whose rights are increasingly trampled upon at home.  A citizenry that sees itself as members of clashing political or racial groups rather than as brothers and sisters united in their devotion to a nation that was once considered humanity’s best hope for the future. That’s the new America some seek to develop.

The Mind of the Media

The 21st Century has seen extraordinary events involving pandemics, riots, impeachment attempts, international threats, and other near-apocalyptic issues. Much of the media’s presentation of related news has reflected partisan views rather than actual facts.

Reporting on foreign affairs has been tainted by the goal of many journalist to divert federal spending away from the military and towards social programs.  To this end, reality is ignored. China has escalated its military spending faster than either the USSR or the USA at the height of the Cold War.  It openly threatens its neighbors, and actually has sent its naval vessels to illegally lay claim to their territory. It has developed a formidable nuclear force.  It has destroyed an orbiting satellite.  Russia, thanks to an arms treaty signed by Obama, owns the world’s largest nuclear force. Iran’s leadership consistently chants “Death to America.”  All that is downplayed, because to admit it would mean that the Left, which essentially owns most of the major media outlets, is irresponsible in its attempt to underfund the U.S. military, which still suffers significantly from the Obama Administration’s years of cutbacks.     

Trump derangement syndrome has made coverage of the pandemic ludicrous. The COVID-19 virus began in China, and the Beijing regime hid the information from the rest of the world, allowing its citizens from the most affected regions to travel across the planet. The ruling Communist Party used its influence on the World Health Organization to help obscure the truth. President Trump stopped travel from China when all this was discovered, and was branded a “racist” and “xenophobe” for doing so.  He convened a national panel to fight the disease.  The Democratic leadership of America’s largest city, New York, ignored the threat and actually encouraged people to take the subways and attend crowded events. It soon became the planetary epicenter of the contagion.  But the media casts Trump as being responsible for the epidemic, because, of course, all bad things are Trump’s fault.

The House hearings on Democrat charges of Russian Collusion nearly tore America apart, but the charge made no sense and had no basis from the start. Why would Putin want to help Trump? Obama promised Moscow that he would further weaken America’s missile defenses upon his re-election, a fact inadvertently revealed when he spoke, not realizing his microphone was on. His administration allowed the sale of the basic ingredients of nuclear weapons to Russia. He took actions which allowed Moscow to overtake Washington’s influence in the Middle East. He ignored the growing military feebleness of America’s NATO allies. Candidate Trump promised to overturn these drastic mistakes. In an attempt by his party to retain the White House in the 2016 election, key current and former Democratic supporters in the Department of Justice and the intelligence services concocted an utterly false story that the Trump campaign “colluded” with Russia.  Despite a complete lack of evidence and charges proven to be completely false, the media clings to the collusion narrative that led to the impeachment hearings. To admit their bias and error would be too painful an admission.

On another irrational note, The Trump Administration’s economic policies produced the lowest unemployment rate for blacks in history.  Its policies to stop illegal immigration directly assist African-American communities in a variety of ways. It has appointed Blacks to major positions.  But the media has decided that it is racist, because the Democratic Party “owns” the black vote, and anything that threatens that plantation mentality contradicts the media narrative that the Trump Administration doesn’t help blacks. Until COVID struck, the Trump Administration achieved the best unemployment rate in about half a century.  His policies to force industries to move back to the U.S. from abroad are unprecedented, contrasting sharply with the actions of his predecessor. (Remember Obama saying that “Those jobs are gone and not coming back?”)  The bulk of plutocrat donations go to his opponents.  But the media has decided that Trump is for the rich, not the middle class or the poor, because, while lowering taxes for all, he also pushed lower taxes for corporations, which were previously moving out of the U.S. to more tax-friendly nations, and taking their jobs with them.

Most of the media has essentially abandoned the concept of honesty, and serves largely as a spokesman for leftist organizations.

An innocent man’s life was knowingly, wholly and intentionally shattered to advance the political goals of a party that had lost an honest election. A nation was thrown into turmoil for years by a collection of elected officials and strategically placed bureaucrats who believed that they had the right to engage in underhanded efforts to reject the will of the people.

The actions of people like Adam Schiff, Nancy Pelosi, Charles Schumer, John Brennan, James Comey, Andrew McCabe, and Peter Strzok, and the pundits in the media that aided and abetted their illicit efforts reflect the direct legacy of the utter corruption of the Obama Administration, which turned the machinery of government into a partisan attack dog. The extent of the foul play that has prevailed since the advent of the Obama-Biden White House is unprecedented.

The actions of Loretta Lynch, who used the Justice Department to terrorize those who merely disagreed with Obama, and those of Lois Lerner, who openly utilized her position at the IRS to harass conservatives, were vicious and worthy of jail time. 

But of course, no prosecutions occurred, just as no criminal charges were brought against Hillary Clinton, who authorized the sale of the basic ingredient of nuclear weapons to an enemy nation in return for cash considerations to her “foundation.”

The actions of the Obama Administration were far worse.  Rather than employing a few scoundrels, whole branches of government were morphed into partisan tools.  This was not just an assault on political adversaries, it was an assault against morality itself and the entire constitutional order.  It reflected the worst practices of the worst regimes in history.  It’s the same type of practice that the Nazi Party did to the German government, and what the Communist Party did to the Russian government. The Party’s interest became more important than the nation’s, and horror ensued.

There is no act too outrageous, no statement too untrue, for party-above-nation believers to engage in.  The Democratic Senator from Connecticut, Chris Murphy, alleges that Trump is more to blame for the COVID-19 crisis than China, a statement so absurd it should have been met with total ridicule.  But, in an election year, it helps his Party, so it goes un-responded to by many Democrats and their media allies.  The damage to America and the help to an enemy nation is not a consideration, as long it achieves partisan goals.

The absence of not only patriotism but morality itself has led to this juncture.  America’s national soul will not be expunged until the citizenry rejects the placement of partisanship above honesty, morality, the rule of law, and the nation itself.

Communist Cuba continues to repress the Cuban people while simultaneously undermining democracy in the region, according to the State Department’s Acting Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Michael Kozak. He said the United States is increasing pressure on the Castro regime to “stop the repression of its citizens and its intervention in other countries, particularly Venezuela.”

The country’s leadership is unable to produce the resources it needs to feed its population. Kozak noted that “Its economy is parasitic, depending for years on massive subsidies from the Soviet Union, and later on depending on a revenue stream from its essentially colonial relationship with Venezuela.” The extreme poverty of Venezuela is now impacting Cuba as its communist economic advisors find themselves facing extreme shortages under the government-controlled economy.

US policy toward Cuba is designed to restrict their other key sources of revenue to force the regime to face up to the deficiencies of its own model and allow some major freedom to its own people. The US is exposing the truth about the Cuban medical missions program, a moneymaking scheme disguised as humanitarian assistance, according to Kozak. The State Department also is discouraging travel that involves staying in hotels run by the Cuban military to break the monopoly of the Cuban military as established on processing remittances.

VENEZUELA

Elliott Abrams, the US Special Representative for Venezuela, said that there were roughly 7,000 extrajudicial killing over the last year in the country. Pompeo said: “They can’t allow religious freedom because people of conscience understand that those freedoms that they value would be at risk.”  The party “understands that the things the CCP leadership want to keep people from doing would be a risk if they permitted any dissent or exercise of individual conscience rights,” he said.

In his final comment to a reporter Thursday, Pompeo said: “Weakness breeds risk and strength is respected with respect to the Chinese Communist Party. So, you can see that in how China has responded to President Trump just being candid, just being honest. This isn’t about being angry.
